A number of well known and highly regarded recent works have offered a striking contrast in evaluating Grant’s command performance than is shown in this work. No attempt has been made to directly address the perspective of this new work. The Livermore data continues to be the most authoritative data available for a quantitative analysis of command performance. The underlying validity of this analysis has not been altered by recent scholarship.
